Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi, is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha. This ten-day festival begins on the fourth day of the Hindu lunisolar month of Bhadrapada, which typically falls in August or September in the Gregorian calendar.
The festival is observed with the installation of clay idols of Ganesha in homes and in public spaces on elaborately decorated pandals. Devotees engage in chanting Vedic hymns and sacred Hindu texts such as the Ganapati Upanishad, along with offering prayers and observing vrata (fasting). Offerings and prasadam are distributed from the pandals to the community, often including sweets like modak, which is believed to be Lord Ganesha’s favorite.
