Krishna Janmashtami, also known simply as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. It holds special significance for followers of the Vaishnavism tradition within Hinduism.
The celebrations include vibrant dance-dramas depicting Krishna’s life, as narrated in the Bhagavata Purana—notably Ras Lila and Krishna Lila. Devotees observe the occasion with devotional singing through the midnight hour when Krishna is believed to have been born, along with fasting (upavasa), a night vigil (jagarana), and a grand festival (mahotsava) the following day.
